【Piano Posture & Technique】Why the Basics Matter from Day One

已更新:8月6日

When learning piano, posture, finger placement, and where the power comes from are often overlooked. But these are the foundation of all good playing. Without them, it’s not just hard to improve—it can even cause fatigue or injury over time.

What is a correct piano sitting position?

  • Bench height should be just right: Your elbow should be slightly higher than the keys, so your arm can drop naturally and control the sound.

  • Sit tall, don’t slouch: Good posture gives your body balance and core stability.

  • Feet should rest flat on the floor: Helps support your balance while playing.

Why hand shape and power source matter

  • Fingers should play with the fingertips, not flat fingers or the pads.

  • Power should come from arm weight, not just finger muscles.

  • Proper technique helps you play faster, more clearly, and expressively.

What happens if these habits aren’t fixed early on?

  1. Poor sound control: Music sounds too loud, too soft, or flat without expression.

  2. Hand and arm fatigue: Incorrect technique can cause discomfort and even pain.

  3. Advanced techniques become hard: Scales, arpeggios, and fast passages are much harder with bad hand habits.

  4. Loss of motivation: Kids may give up when they can’t play well or feel frustrated.

  5. Affects other instruments too: Instruments like violin or guitar also rely on correct finger strength and arm posture.

Posture and technique in piano are like the foundation of a house. If it’s not strong, nothing built on it will last. Parents and students—please don’t underestimate the importance of hand shape and posture. These little things decide how far your child can go.
